Fender Jazz Bass vs. Precision Bass. A Jazz Bass typically has a thinner neck (17/16″ wide at the nut, compared to the Precision’s 13/4″), has two narrow, eight-polepiece pickups (instead of one on the Precision Bass) which deliver a more versatile tone (often described as richer in the midrange and treble). These new models consist of Jazz and Precision basses – the latter with a PJ pickup configuration – with a five-string Jazz option also available. Retailing at $1,899.99/£1959 apiece, they occupy that tricky space at the top end of the mid-range price bracket. With that figure in mind, we’ll be expecting good things.

You can usually find a used MIA Standard Jazz and Precision for $1,000 or less. As far as whether or not its a good investment is concerned, in the short term, no. The bass is worth less now than it was new. Long term, say 30 or 40 years from now, it may be worth several times what you paid. Most 5-String J-basses with 18mm spacing use this size. The "Fender American Standard V" 5-String J-Bass has 19mm string spacing at the bridge and uses larger size pickups. In both cases, they have a shorter neck pickup and a longer bridge pickup. For the American Standard V (sometimes called "AS") the bridge pickup is ~4-1/8" (~105mm) and the I’ve played 5 string exclusively for the past 2 years and it’s doubtful I’ll ever go back to 4 string. Anyway the point is this is a small review of the “Fender American Pro II Precision bass V”. It is not a typical P-bass. The neck does not fell like a baseball bat. The balance is perfect.
